Default Cardroom mechanics

On a different thread, somebody asked whether NYC clubs are often worked by mechanics. I have no idea. The question got me interested enough, however, to find this video, which is really quite remarkable: Mechanic in action I found the whole question so intriguing, that I have ordered the DVD just so I will know what to look for if it ever comes up.

There is the definitive book on this subject called the expert at the card table by S.W. Erdnase, published in 1902.

On the bright side there is little to worry about, 99.8% of the dealers couldn't deal a hanger in they practiced for a year.

Your knowledge about esoteric, remotely poker-related crap is remarkable. (That said, I think mechanics actually try to avoid dealing hangers, i.e., cards that jut out conspicuously from the deck as the result of setting up a base deal.)

I own the book.... thats the only reason why I have any knowlege on the subject. Its actually very popular with magicians, when I was a kid I loved magic... but my ability to handle cards sucks.

TT's got a point though. Most of the cardroom dealers in NYC couldn't find a black man in Harlem.

There are parts of Harlem that make your statement harder than it sounds my friend.

Yeshiva University is in Washington Heights, not Harlem.
