When Some One Says You Play Good
so I am in a GREAT 5/10 half pot game, table full of monkeys. as in one drunk player anounces "I'm gonna play this next hand in the dark" and proceeds to raise and raise the whole way with this other guy until he is all in by the river, pot is about 7K, he turns over his random piece of cheese (J5) and looses.
so after a few orbits this guy sitting next to me says "you play really good" and I freeze up a bit not knowing what to say, so I say "but I barely play any hands" he says "yeah but that's the best way to play, have a lot of patience" I obviously don't want him thinking this, so I say "˙eah but I've won just one hand the whole time I've been here" (which was true, but one hand was all I needed to be well up for the night) but he persists in his correct thinking "but agaisnt these players if you play patiently you make the money" I sort of shrugged and that ended the conversation anyone know some Mike Caro-esque dialouge to use in situations like this? I don't want to be known as tight |

Re: When Some One Says You Play Good
any problem with just politely saying thank you and not worrying about it?

Re: When Some One Says You Play Good

Re: When Some One Says You Play Good
gonna be tough to appear loose if you aren't. mix in a strange play here and there that you know you can get away from. i know that sounds simple, but i can't think of any other way to get the appearance you desire.

Re: When Some One Says You Play Good
You don't want the conversation to go on long, or you will draw more attention to yourself. Just smile and say thanks, like one poster said. Or say something about all the trash hands you're getting and how you'd love to see a face card someday.
Or you could joke about it. One time a guy commented on my tight preflop play. "I'm sorry," I said with a big smile. "I only know how to play AA." But I don't think it's a big deal if someone makes a comment. The bad players will give you action anyway. |

Does this count...?
I usually prefer to just smile and stay quiet when someone pays a compliment. This morning, I'm minding my business waiting for a seat in my usual 9/18 game when an unfamiliar older gentleman comes up and says hi, introduces himself and shakes my hand.
HE: You play really good. You're really polite and patient too. You do this for a living, huh? ME: Nah, I'm just a recreational player. HE: No, you're consistently cashing out big amounts. I've seen you. ME: Nah, I just buy in for a lot. HE: Well, that may be so, but you still win consistently. ME: Yeah, I've had my share of lucky days. HE: So you do play full-time? ME: No, I'm just here about three times a week. Four if I'm lucky. After a few more minutes of unimpress banter about gambling and crap... HE: So you play professionally, huh? ME: No, I just like the game. HE: C'mon, I've seen you. You play for a living, huh? ME: Uh...yeah. HE: I knew it! Yeah, I knew it...yeah, I knew it. Yeah. (A long silence) Okay, good luck today, see ya. Whatever. |

Re: When Some One Says You Play Good
If someone said I played good I think it would go something like this.
Person: "I've been watching you and I think you play good." Me: "well" Person: "huh?" Me: "its not good, its well" Person: "..... what?" Me: "I think you play WELL..... idiot" After that they'd hate to think that your good because you're such a jerk |

Re: When Some One Says You Play Good
This happened to me...someone (a weak-tighty) told me I play pretty well and everyone at the table hears it...I instantly say I'm just not playing because the deck is colder than my ex.. everyone at the table laughed and didn't think anything of it

Re: When Some One Says You Play Good
"I'm using the secret my father taught me. I only play a hand after I've been dealt the jack of diamonds on the previous hand."
P.S. It really works!!!! /M |
