Meta game

Call me stupid, uninformed, naive or a newbie, but what on earth is a "meta game" and what are the dynamics there that are important to understand?

Meta game plays are plays you make which will have an effect on the way your opponents view you and affect their play in the future. You might call an opponents steal raise so he knows you will call that raise, so he won't do it again in the future (Unless he has a premium holding, so he knows you think he has crap... you see where this is going?)

Metagame would be the highest conceptual level of the game you are playing. While each individual hand constitutes a game, the session, your image, your bankroll et al, would be the metagame.

Very roughly Meta means 'above'.

So the game is each hand then you have a session level where your actions determine your image and therefore the results of a session and the meta game is above that working at the very long term level.
