It is a mistake to take non-poker players with you to the casino.
The difference in the amount of time involved is insurmountable. Everytime I go gambling with non-poker players, I regret it.
The only thing that works is when we go out of town and we take some of my wife's buddies along. They can watch shows, play slots, go shopping or whatever and I can play poker uninterupted. Now that is a win-win. They have fun, I get to play. Even taking another poker player can be a pain. I was at Grand Victoria one night and two dealers from Caesar's IN were there. They reached an agreement about when they would leave and when it was time to leave, one was way up and wanted to go and the one that drove was stuck and didn't want to leave. I was ready to go so I offeed him a ride. We ran into some other players at the Deli that lived closer to him, so he rode home with them, but He was pissed. |

[ QUOTE ]
The difference in the amount of time involved is insurmountable. Everytime I go gambling with non-poker players, I regret it. [/ QUOTE ] One of my good friends considers himself a "blackjack player" -- his strategy is to buy $20 in red chips at a $10 minimum table and play with it for hours, because he's "the luckiest man alive". Of course, variance being what it is, even the luckiest man alive has his cold streaks, and he often finds himself wandering around the poker room at Turning Stone waiting for us to cash out and leave. Many a trip has been cut short, though this will not be a problem in the future because I believe he's out of money. -DB |

It's not a mistake to go with non-poker players necesarily, but it is a mistake to go with those that are not hardcore, inveterate gamblers (or, rather, at a similar level of hardcoritude to yourself). Also, make sure they are properly-funded hardcore inveterate gamblers. As long as they understand "the lifestyle" it's fine, whether they are poker players, dice shooters, or slot junkies.

I won't go to the casino with friends that are pit players that I can't trust not to continue blowing hundreds of $$$ they can't afford because they're bored while I play. If you aren't going to make me feel guilty after you blow your paycheck away and don't bug me to leave 8 hours into my session, you're welcome to tag along...

Re: It is a mistake to take non-poker players with you to the casino.
Although I play live very little, I can see this as being a problem. Last time I played I was at tahoe, and my friend's girlfriend was constantly hanging on him and asking for attention, just overall a distraction.
I am now worried because the next time I will be able to play is probably when I next hit up tahoe, which will likely be with my girlfriend. WE usually head up as a couple and I don't think she can fathom the idea of watching my play 3/6 for 3-4 hours straight. So should I venture into the realm of teaching her to play poker as well so she can sit at the table with me ? Or should I just not play when it is just me and her ? Anyone with similar experiences ? |

If you come to the Commerce during the day you can get her a spa appointment, and if you go to any casino in Vegas there should be things to do. Time to move.

Yeah if the casino that you go to doesn't have a bus to your city never go with a fellow gambler unless your driving. One time I went with a guy from my neighbourhood and I had to bum a ride of a guy I barely knew to avoid a 70 dollar cab fare to my house.......

Re: It is a mistake to take non-poker players with you to the casino.
I used to bring the girlfriend with when I went to play B&M, but I won't do it anymore. She doesn't really play anything (except nickel slots, lol), and Canterbury has only table games. Since sitting and watching live 6/12 & 8/16 poker isn't terribly exciting to her, she would get antsy after a few orbits. I don't think it's worth the trip for a relatively short session.
Teaching her to play is an option I've explored (from watching me play online on my laptop, and letting her sweat me, she actually could probably play better than some of the lower limit players already), and even offered to bankroll her, but she has declined. I'm not sure why, perhaps she is intimidated by sitting at the table. |
