Bowl games 12/30
Tempted to take T-Tech +11.
Cal playing in Holiday Bowl is a let-down and they really did look pretty lousy at Southern Miss. Can Red Raiders keep it close?? 4 of Cal's 5 wins before the USM game were blow-outs against mostly crappy opposition: at AZ 38-0, vs ASU 27-0, at WASH 42-12, vs Stan 41-6. The scores look impressive....but ASU was the only decent opponent in there and I'm honestly not convinced they were THAT decent. AZ and WASH are just awful....and Stanford is just a rung or two above awful. Am I the only one who thinks the PAC-10 is overrated? UCLA is unspectacular and lost to freaking Wyoming. Oregon St looked against Notre Dame though (if that means anything). Insight appreciated on this one. I already have NIU +2 vs. Troy. Although the more I look at Troy the less confident I am in this bet. I'm already a whopping 1-3 picking the MAC bowl games. won with UC over Marshall. Lost with BG over Memphis, Iowa St over Miami and UConn over Toledo. NM finished the season 5-0....but they were all fairly close and pretty low scoring games so giving Navy 3 points might have value. Both teams like to run the ball quite a bit so I certainly don't see a blow-out in this one either way. NM defense ranks 8th nationally against the run...and Navy is the 3rd most productive rushing team (using the option). I had to look up the fact that the Emerald Bowl is in SF. I'm strongly leaning towards Navy +3 on this one. NC at 6-5 didn't impress me a whole lot but all 5 of their losses were to decent bowl teams (Louisville, FSU, Utah, Va-Tech, Virginia). BC won 4 straight before getting blown out by Syracuse (who just fired their coach). They had a 1 point win over ND, beat rutgers and a mediocre WV team and beat up on a lousy Temple squad. I might be tempted to take NC just for the home-field advantage here as well as their stronger schedule...but I don't really have a very good handle on this game. |
