Default Help for a Tunica Tourist 12/25 - 1/1/04

My friends and I will be heading down to Tunica, Mississippi from 12/25 (this Saturday) through the following Saturday, 1/1/05....

We're staying at the Goldstrike.

Any big events happening there next week?

Anything we should definitely check out?

Any amazing comp program that we should get in on?

Where's the best action? If it's the Goldstrike, where else?

Mainly we're going to be looking for $5/10 - $10/20 hold 'em.

Any and all help would be appreciated at this late hour...

I like the Gold Strike, a lot. I have never played at the HorseShoe but will on my next trip down. You are going to get about a dozen posts saying the action is better at the Horseshoe and they are probably right.

The Gold Strike will have lots of 3-6 games, and usually a No-Limit game. I think 10-20 and higher can be scarse at times.

It is my understanding the 10-20 game at the Horseshoe has all the action any reasonable or unreasonable player can stand.

Monday night 7pm I think, (sorry I work graveyard and forget) 65.00 NLHE tournament at the Horseshoe. Top 2 spots are always around 5k, 2500 respectively ($40 rebuys)

There is no such thing as 5-10 in the area. 4-8 is the low limit game. then 10-20. Go to the Horseshoe for these.

The Goldstrike has 3-6 and a nice little 1-2 NL game. But be careful in that NL. there is no max buy-in and the lineups is either shark infested or it's a smorgasbord of delight. I tend to suggest the evening NL is generally better.

Dont worry about comps at the shoe. Just ask and you will be fed. Goldstrike is a little bit tighter but not bad.
I would presume you are getting the poker rate on the room already. If not, go to the poker room when you get there and ask.

Best wishes

Agree with Bigfish and steamboatin.

Horseshoe has good games at 4/8, 10/20 and 20/40.

Gold Strike sometimes isn't spreading higher than 3/6 limit on weekdays I think....but that 1/2 NL game was good the one time i played it.

do a search for more info. I've posted my extensive Tunica thoughts (specifically Horseshoe) in a couple different threads within the past 2-3 weeks.
for some reason, there's been a lot of Tunica talk lately so do yourself a favor and read through some of the recent threads.

Here's

Horseshoe - the best. hands down. no question. best management. best games. best action. highest action. best comps. easily the best dealers (not even close). you can show up....get into the 4/8 game, ask for a burger or something from the snack-bar....not a problem. they really do take care of their players.

Gold Strike - walking distance from Shoe - my 2nd choice when wait-lists are too long at Shoe. kind of dull though. always puts me to sleep. the only times i've been at a table where we've had problems with guys falling asleep in-between or during hands have been at the Strike.

Grand - Pretty decent room. They run DAILY tournaments...usually at 11a or noon. Buy-in's vary...most of the tourneys are re-buys. Fairly popular.
Sam's town - An adequate room. Tourneys on Tues and Thurs morn I think.
Hollywood - A bad room with maybe 2 tables of 3/6 filled with local RV-seniors. Not worth your time.

non poker casinos - Sheraton. hypes their video-poker a lot in TV ads.
Harrah's - slot-house primarily
Fitzgeralds - Kind of fun. Best double-deck BJ in Tunica perhaps. The only place in Tunica that serves Guiness (so my dealer friends like to go there)
Bally's - Pretty amusing little place. go there for a good laugh. country-western theme. Looks like a big barn with a silo. Features $0.25 craps and $0.50 roulette (seriously). I was a dealer at Bally's for 8 months from Aug 03 to Apr 04. All the dealers there are pretty much breaking-in as it's the lowest-paying place in tunica (lowest tip-rate for the dealers). The dealers do surprisingly well though for all the rookies they constantly have coming in and out. but sometimes you'll get a dealer who pays you quadruple on your double-down or something really weird.

Sheraton, Gold Strike and Horseshoe are all on the same lot (walking distance of each other). you'll have a 2-minute drive to Bally's and a 5-minute drive to get to any of the others.

Assuming I eventually get over this freaking cold I might make it down there one of those nights.

First, thanks to everyone for the information -- always appreciated to get a leg up when heading down their blind and I will backtrack through old threads.

I owe the Goldstrike something like 24 hours of play due to them giving my friend and I the poker rate, but after I fly through that, I'll definitely give the Horseshoe a look-see.

One thing I didn't see mentioned, goldstrike does spread 6-12 Holdem quite a bit, and they have spread 5-10 at least once, but I haven't seen that in a while.

Also, the floorpeople at GS are very open to spreading non-standard games when its not crowded (I cleaned out a bunch of frat boys playing pineapple at 4:00AM once) and they will reduce the rake if you're playing shorthanded if you ask.
