Default Speaking of Minnesota...

Hey all,

I already tried searching, but that was only mildly helpful... I will be in Minnesota for a weekend in a couple months and want to try to play some poker while I'm there. My questions:

1) Is Canterbury the closest place to Rochester that offers hold 'em? If not, where is? FYI, I'm looking to play 15/30-ish limit or 5/5-ish no-limit.

2) Assuming that Canterbury is the place, what's the scene like on weekends? Do you have to wait forever to get a seat at one of those limits?

3) Is it suicide for a Southerner to rent a car and attempt to drive miles in the dead of Minnesota winter when he only has a vague idea of where he's going?

4) Anything else I should know?

Thanks in advance.

Canterbury is it. 15-30 available. There is no no limit game. State law that maximum bet is $60.

15-30 should not have an incredibly long wait on the weekends. It also will not be incredibly hard to get to from Rochester as long as weather is ok.

PM me if you know your coming I can try to make it out. I usally play 6-12.

The wait is not so bad on the weekend. There should be 3 8/16, 2or3 15/30, and 2 30/60.

The first poster was right there is no NL in Minnesota. If you were interested in pot limit there is a 5/10 PL in Wisconson at a place call the Ho Chunk casino. It has been known to be a pretty big game. That is a 160 miles away. There is also a new room opening a racetrack in Des Moine Iowa were there will be NL or PL games, that is 200 miles away but very easy drive. Don't have more info on name though.
Driving is no big deal, just check the wheather.

That's the worst spell of weather we've had in Minnesota this year.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

The roads are usually plowed pronto after a snowstorm. Make sure you have a windshield scraper. Credit cards work ok in the south when you get a once a year dusting...

A very risky day to drive in Minn is the first snowfall day each year when it is below 30 degrees. Everyone has forgotten how to drive and it gets slippery. On a day like that, make sure you have car insurance...

Last I heard, Ho Chunk no longer has a poker room as they need to work out some issues with the state. They should have one again sometime, but I do not know if/when it will reopen. If you are thinking about making the drive down there it would be best to call ahead to see if they have it, 1-800-7HOCHUNK (make sure you dial the 7 first).

Well I just called ho chunk and they don't have poker right now. However, they are getting it back for sure, but do not have a date for when it will be back yet.

$15/30 goes daily, as do $6/12 and $8/16. $30/60 goes almost daily. The only no-limit offered there is tournaments. Check www.canterburypark.com for information on those, if you're interested.

There can be very long waits for $30/60, as the people who play those tend to be adequately bankrolled and tend to stay a while. If there are two games going, the wait isn't too bad. The same applies to a lesser extend to the $15/30 game. If you're playing on a Friday or Saturday, do try to get there by 5 or 6, as the waits can get very long in the evening. If there is only one $15/30 game going on a Friday, the wait can be painfully long, but you can get in a jackpot game while you wait.

Possibly. They're very good about keeping the roads clear around here, leading the free world in salt and sand. That said, driving on ice and snow can suck, and if you're not used to it, I don't want to be on the road at the same time as you, so give us fair warning, OK? As someone pointed out, driving during the first significant snow of the year is awful.
