Default Missed out on a nice pot - Should I have called?

Party Poker Pot-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (9 handed)

UTG+1 ($36.55)
MP1 ($21.5)
MP2 ($6)
MP3 ($25)
CO ($42.22)
Button ($23.5)
SB ($24.05)
BB ($66.89)
Hero ($39.65)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. SB posts a blind of $0.25.
Hero raises to $1, UTG+1 folds, MP1 raises to $3, MP2 folds, MP3 calls $3, CO folds, Button folds, SB (poster) folds, BB folds, Hero calls $2.

Flop: ($9.75) K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 3[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (3 players)
Hero checks, MP1 bets $4, MP3 calls $4, Hero folds.

Turn: ($17.75) 5[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 players)
MP1 bets $10, MP3 calls $10.

River: ($37.75) 4[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
MP1 checks, MP3 bets $4, MP1 calls $4.

Final Pot: $45.75

MP1 has 9s 9h (one pair, nines).
MP3 has Tc Ah (high card, ace).
Outcome: MP1 wins $45.75.

As you can see, I missed out on what, at this level, is a VERY nice pot.

I was sure that MP1 had pocket aces since he bet 4 on the flop.
I suppose I would probably have folded after the turn because of the possible flush.

But - was I being TOO conservative?

Nice, short answer.

However, had I stayed in for the turn - would I then have been correct to fold at that point? Two other players betting high with 3 hearts on the table.

The only way I'm SURE my opponent has pocket aces is if he shows them to me. But that would just be stupid. So that aside, you have a hand thats good at producing TPTK, and thats what it did. Why would you throw it away at that point for a bet thats less than 1/2 the pot?

I'd probably reraise the size of the pot to put pressure on a flush draw.

raising here is better than folding. i understand you have a feeling you may be beat, at the very least raise and give up the hand if you continue to get action. all he did was raise preflop then small bet the flop, he could be on a million differnet hands. sometimes calling is ok.

oh yea and dont min raise preflop. come in for a real raise or limp.

I think my problem was that I had been taking a series of bad beats on the river.
A couple of AA and a couple of AK had all lost to the river.

Maybe I was just scared.

Well, as they say, you learn from your mistakes.
I prefer to learn the easy way but I suppose you remember it better if you learn the hard way.

I thought I was weak tight. What were you hoping to flop w/AK? His bet on the flop is not as big as you seem to think it is. Bet out or check-raise the flop to see where you're at. You would likely not have to face the large bet on the turn if you had done so.

If you're going to fold to a less than half the pot flop bet when you hit TPTK with AK, just fold to his reraise preflop. Like Watch said...what are you hoping to flop?

raise the flop. If he reraises or plays back into you on the turn, then you can start thinking maybe TPTK is no good.

Pre-flop UTG either limp, limp/raise, or bet at least 4X BB with AK.

That flop hit YOU, so either bet at least 1/2 the pot or check-raise, calling is the worst option, folding to less than 1/2 pot bet is not an option here.

Since you commented on the $4 bet by MP1, I think your problem is you are playing a little over your bankroll. You should be considering bets as percentages of pots and stacks, and not be concerned with the actual dollar amounts per se.

Good luck.
