First Omaha hi PL tournament
I have played omaha hi/lo before, but never omaha hi. I figured I might try a tournament. 69 players entered and I somehow managed to get to the last 19 players.
I have 5400 in tournament chips, blinds are 200-400. I'm UTG with A [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]K [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]5 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]2 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] and limp. CO and button also limps, SB calls, BB checks. Flop: K [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]5 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] I'm thinking really hard how much I should bet, I really have no idea. I was leaning towards betting the pot. No need to think too hard though because BB bets 1000, he is the big stack at the table. I raise all-in. How did I do? Peter |

Re: First Omaha hi PL tournament
I think pushing is definitely the right play. You have tons of outs to the nut low, and 9 outs to the nut high. This is a great chance to double up. Hope it worked out.

Re: First Omaha hi PL tournament
It was omaha hi, not omaha hi/lo. Does this change your view? How about the preflop call?

Re: First Omaha hi PL tournament
I would push on the flop.
However, I wouldn't play that trash hand UTG or in any other posiiton. It might be OK if everyone is limping early in the tournament due to nut flush possibilities. Did you forget you weren't playing PLO high/low. It is a good high/low hand. |

No, I knew I was playing omaha hi. I just haven't got a good (if any) understanding of good starting hands for this game.

Re: First Omaha hi PL tournament
You want 4 cards that work together. TT98, KQT9, that sort of thing. Big pairs are valuable. Small pairs are worthless. It helps to be suited or double suited, but you want to have a high card of your suit, preferably an ace. Suitedness in small cards is valuable only in you are allin before the flop.
Rolf Slotboom discusses this in articles on CardPlayer and PokerPages. There is more detail in Cloutier and McEvoy's Omaha book. |

Thanks, I'll check out his articles.
As it turned out, BB called with K976 with 2 spades and got a runner runner flush. Peter |

Re: First Omaha hi PL tournament
Hi Peter,
I don't know much about tournament play, as I am mostly a money player. But when it comes to starting hands in PLO, I have two articles that you may find helpful. They can be found in the articles section on my site or else in the Card Player archives. Rolf Slotboom www.acespeaks.cjb.net |
