It smells like a set of 88 to me.

He can't have a higher pocket pair because he would re-raise on the flop or turn. And I don't think he would call your all-in bet on the river with a higher pocket pair when the boards pair.

To me it seams like he slow played and hit four of a kind on the river and happily called and took your money.

And how did you play it:

Pre-flop:
Prefect.

Flop:
Very good to bet into the bettor. Excellent!

Turn:
Nice bet.. Enough to make him re-raise you if he has an overpair.

River:
I'm not sure about your move on the river.. Why so much? What do you put Gift of Gab on?
If he has an overpair he will probably fold and you risk $708 and gains nothing. But it all comes down to what you put him on. If you think he have an overpair.. Bet less. If you think he have A8..(Would really Gift raise pre-flop with A8?) it's a very good bet. If you think he have 22 or 33 than it's also excellent. And so on.. It all comes down to what you think he have. So.. what do you think he had when you bet on the river?

Looks good to me, but unless he sees you as LAG, do you think he will call your river bet with AA-1010?

I know at a lower stakes game they sure would, but what about thegiftofgab? what type of player is he and how does he view you?

I think Gab probably had AA, which would explain why he didn't raise the turn or river (he's not really worried about free cards, and he might be beat by a set, so he wins when you bluff, and saves money when you have him beat).

He probably put you on an over pair, since you'll frequently check the flop to a solid, EP preflop raiser with a big hand.

After he calls your flop bet, would you consider check raising the turn, since he's likely to bet the turn if you bet the flop then check the turn?

Assuming AJo still thinks he's ahead and not very vulnerable here, I like the 1/2 pot bet on the turn. The opponent does not raise, leaving an optimal situation for the river. If a scare card comes (A or K, for example, if you think he's on a high pair), then AJo could evaluate the situation and possibly save himself some money -- it seems unlikely to me that opponent would fold his hand to a c/r-push on the turn if he didn't fold to the push on the river. On the other hand, if a card like the 8 hits, AJo hasn't yet shown his strength -- opponent could read AJo for an overbet without the goods to support it (which, it seems, he did).

As I'll qualify all of my posts for a short while: I'm a relative newbie and I'm curious if any of these observations seem off the mark to the more experienced players in the group. Let me know what you think.

You are hoping GoG is putting you on something like 99?
