Max PMs in my PM box?

I just noticed a red message that reads:

"You are at or over the max number of private messages each user may have. In order to receive new private messages you will need to delete some of your saved ones."

So I deleted 100 messages or so, but the msg is still there and I can't receive new PMs...what is the # of PMs I have to reduce my inbox to in order to receive new ones??

Or is it just a time thing...i.e. has the system simply not yet recognized that I just cleaned up my inbox 10 mins ago??
