ctrl-[print screen] (up near the break key on most keyboards) will copy the entire desktop to the clipboard. Paste into a drawing program

alt-[print screen] will copy the active window to the clipboard.

There are several good freeware/shareware utilities that will automatically save to hard drives with names like pic001, pic002. They also work on selected areas of the screen - not entire windows. SnagIt (shareware) is my choice.

I just hit Print Screen. I don't think there's any need to hold down Ctrl.

hit the "print scrn SysRq" button, which is next to the F12 key on most keyboards.

Then open up microsoft paint, open the Edit tab, and hit "paste". Or you can hit "ctrl+v" when pasting into paint.
