Default Another going pro thread (lots of dirty laundry aired)

This was always the goal, but this wasn't how it was supposed to happen.

I had of course planned to build a nice bankroll before I took this plunge. But, since I was recently laid off of my job, I am forced to make this happen before I am ready, both from a bankroll standpoint and from an ability standpoint. I do consider myself to be a winning player, but not where I'd like to be my any means.

I have no doubt in my ability to generate income. I have made about 15k since Jan 1. Most of this is from tournament scores, BBJ payouts and bonus whoring. I would estimate about 20% of the money I have made this year has come from cash games, being home games or online ( I rarely play in casinos).

So where is this 15k? Some may remember I made a pact with myself to save every dime I make playing poker to see where I stand...

Well that didn't hold up. I blew a small amount, but the majority of it went to legal fees to pay for my divorce, then I totalled my car and had to buy another one... The long and the short of it is that I am not penniless, I do have a reasonable BR to play 3-6 and some 5-10.

My philosophy has always been to make enough in the side games to cover my tournament buy-ins. When I make a decent score in a tournament, that's my profit. Same with one table SNG's. I just grind 2-4 and 3-6 to cover my losses. Playing four tables 8 hours doesn't, and never has appealed to me.

So, basically I am looking for advice from those who may have encountered similar situations. Financially speaking, with my girlfriends income and unemployment, it shouldn't be too difficult to maintain the lifestyle I have lived to this point.

Just pointing me to other useful threads or some words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

Look for another job immediately, while playing poker to keep you afloat. Playing poker for an extended period of time will only serve to make you more unemployable in the future.

Hey Slick,

yea I will definitely do that. I am moving in a couple weeks, and I will try to work again ASAP after that.

It will have to be the right job though. The field I am laid off in is automotive retail, and there are a lotta bad jobs and bad companies to work for in this field. Between my g/f's income and unemployment, making up the difference playing cards is not really a problem. I will probably do better than I did working, at least on the short term.

Good luck man...

1 thing - I used to do what you do for the first couple years I played, where I'd play ring games to cover my tourny buy-ins until that big score. Luckily it worked for me for a while, but then I figured out that just playing the ring games was much more profitable per hour even after some "big" wins (big at the time - like $2500ish prizes). Also, ring games have less variance and are more stable if you need to make money. So that's my 2 cents...
