Vegas Thugs
So I'm making my first trip to Vegas after New Year's, it was supposed to be after my 21st last X-mas break but didn't work out. My parents are paying for the flight and hotel (b-day present), I supply the bankroll. Unfortunately I couldn't find any legal friends to go with me, so I'm flying solo. I don't have any concerns about going to Vegas for a couple days by myself, but my mom has been telling me I'm gonna get mugged or followed away from the poker table and accosted after I win big (is that optimism or pessimism?). I personally think I can take care of myself, but to placate my mom (who's paying for the trip) I said I'd look into the dangers of Sin City.
What do you all think - do I need to go strapped? JKratzer |

I wouldn't wander around behind the Stratosphere too much but otherwise I doubt you'll have any trouble.

Re: Vegas Thugs
I'll relate what's been told to me; Stay in the tourist areas, the well lit areas right around the casinos. DO NOT travel outside of the downtown area. The area behind the Strat and southward parallel to the strip is Crackton. Put your roll in your front pocket. Put your smokes on top of your roll (or your wallet). Your wallet should contain enough money to pay for things so that your roll only comes out inside the casino. If you have to go between the strip and downtown take a cab. Take a cab if you go anywhere else.
Having said all that I've been there twice and barring a few likely pickpockets wandering around downtown I felt safe the whole time. There are cops you can see and I would imagine a few you don't. |

Re: Vegas Thugs
yeah, don't go past the Strat. Me and a few friends venturedf that far, went into a liquor store, and the guy working there told us(nicely too) to get the [censored] out of the area. He said this was not a touristy area, and it was instead full of crack heads. Stick near the main casinos and you'll be fine.

Re: Vegas Thugs
Pick Pockets are big during the pirate show in front of Treasure Island. They have signs up warning you about pick pockets but if you get there just before the show, it is to crowded to read the signs.

Re: Vegas Thugs
The stupidist thing you could do under the circumstances would be to take a gun into a casino. That is illegal. If you do get caught however, you might get a cell with that fellow ESPN liked so much, Mike Matsomething.
You did not say what hotel, but if Mom is really concerned, tell her you need to stay at the Bellagio to be safe. It is extremely unlikely anyone will follow you from a poker room because you won big, leaving aside the likelihood you will or will not win big. (Yes, Doyle Brunson was followed home and robbed a few years back, but he is probably better known than you are to have been carrying large amounts of cash.) Staying away from Naked City (near the Stratosphere) is always good advice, regardless of whehter you have cash on you. |
