Default Atlantic City. Is it worth it?

I have an opportunity to go to Atlantic City Nov 13-15.
Free hotel (Bally's), free meals.
It will cost me the price of airfare (probably around $250)

I've never been to Atlantic City. If I went, I would look to play 4-8 to 10-20 hold'em.

Should I go? I'm only 2 hours from Tunica, so I do have the opportunity to play B&M when I want.

I just wonder if Atlantic City is worth the airfare.
If so, is Bally's convenient to the best poker room(s)?
And what are the best poker rooms?

Thanks in advance for any opinions.
JTrout.

A/C has two sections of hotels. The boardwalk on the beach and the marina. All the hotels except Borgata, Harrahs and Trump Marina are on the Boardwalk. You can walk from one end of the boardwalk to the other but it's a long walk. Bally's is centrally located and you can walk to either Trop for Taj from there. There is a little bus called the Jitney that runs froms road in front of the casinos out to the marina. So, you can get out to Borgata for about $3. I go down to A/C just to eat and drink with my wife and sometimes I play 2-4 and sometimes I don't. It's not Vegas but there's stuff going on when you're not playing poker to keep you occupied.

For a listing of the AC casinos that have poker see www.jazbo.com select the poker forum and then select AC Poker Rooms. The info is slightly dated but still lists which casinos have poker and which are smoking (in case that is a consideration either way). Also, check out the 2004 American Casino Guide to get a map of the AC casino layout. I wouldn't want to walk on the boardwalk at night by myself for any major distance, but maybe I'm just a wuss. Thanks to you and Leo for the responses.

How far of a walk to Taj or Trop from Bally's?
On a scale of 1-10, how dangerous of a walk at 1 a.m. on a weekend?
1= I'd feel safe letting my grandmother make the walk with $100 bills hanging from the brim of her hat.

10= you are sure to die.

Shuttles? cab?

I always ask myself this question on my way down to AC. But when I sit down at the table, and a cocktail waitress brings me a cool, refreshing Trump Ice, it's all worth it.

Trop and Taj are walking distance from bally's, but they also have a Jitney Bus that will get you there for a 1.50 in 3 mins. Id recommend the Taj as the best on the boardwalk, but if you can get down to the borgata its well worth it. I personally dont like ballys, smoke gives me a huge headache.
As for safty, I wouldn't be to worried, lots of cops in the area, and not alot of robbery, unfortantely alot of hookers, and it does get more dangerous in the econmically poorer areas. I would say its about a 3 in the way of saftey "Keep your head down, your nose clean and your grandma at home (or just away from the slots), and youll leave with more cash then you came with, as long as you can stay away from the craps tables."

Itll be well worth the airfare if your looking for a fun time, and some fishy poker.

Bally's to Taj: very close--you probably don't even have to go outside

Bally's to Trop: a mile? via Boardwalk, safety=4. via streets, safety=8.5

Forget Taj & Trop and spend every spare minute at the Borgata. On the weekend days, get there before noon and you'll be fine vs the wait lists.

And if you decide to pass up this trip and you can pass the free room/meals on, I'd be happy to pay you a few bucks.

Of course you have to watch yourself. Sometimes there are lots of people out and about and it's real safe. Other times it's rather deserted and scary. So, it can range from 1 to 10. I know I've walked it late at night but I didn't have $100 bills sticking of my pockets. Fastest way between Bally's and Taj is the rickshaw. They don't work late at night but until they go home, they're your fastest way. I'm thinking it's shorter walk from Bally's to Taj than Bally's to Trop. I don't know your age/marital status but the Trop's martini bar downstairs across from the barbecue place gets some mighty nice eye candy late on a Saturday night.

The Borgata is the nicest hotel in A/C and they've got the Borgata Babes.... Good poker, lots to do in the hotel....

The ocean is still warm enough to go swimming and Bally's Wild West buffet is supposed to be the best buffet in A/C.

Thanks for all the replies and info everyone.
It's making me want to book a flight!

The room/meals isn't mine to part with, unfortunately.
A guy in my home game has a business convention there, and said there was extra room/food if you didn't mind wearing a little badge! I think I'll wear it at the poker table, too.
Just to guarantee I get good action!

Thanks again everyone. If I go, I'll drop another line before then.

I'd liked to meat some 2+2ers.

JTrout
