Default 10 most common mistakes in poker

I think, many of them are well-known for everybody. But it's worth while refreshing them in the memory.

David Sklansky's essay "The Eight Mistakes of Poker" (which can be found on the Essays page of this site) is one of my favorite pieces of poker writing. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning what NOT to do when playing.

those are good, but I think the biggest mistake that many players make is simply playing too many hands.

If you are routinely seeing the flop voluntarily more than 2 times per round (at a full table) not including the BB, then you are pissing away chips.

I disagree. I think those ten admonitions pretty much sucked. The key to playing winning poker is patience and discipline, not trickiness, aggression, or even "reading" opponents. Of course those things have their place. But poker is a marathon, not a sprint. Solid play will beat out trickiness every time.

I particularly disagreed with #2: "If you lose a game it is usually because your opponent is a better."

No, if you lose a game it is usually because your opponent had better cards.

If you're still a loser after ten games - or a hundred - then maybe that tells you something.

But the idea that the results of one game tell you something is misleading and counter-productive.

Winning players have losing sessions all the time.

David admitted later that there was at least one error in his analysis:

Unfortunately, when I wrote my Eight Mistakes In Poker and contrasted the mistake of folding when you should call with its opposite number, I did not have Izmet's explanation available to me. It will be included in my next edition.

The basis for his reevaluation is here:
