Uh oh... Ashcroft Gone and the moral decline begins
[ QUOTE ]
WASHINGTON - With barely a word about it, workers at the Justice Department Friday removed the blue drapes that have famously covered two scantily clad statues for the past 3 1/2 years. Spirit of Justice, with her one breast exposed and her arms raised, and the bare-chested male Majesty of Law basked in the late afternoon light of Justice's ceremonial Great Hall. [/ QUOTE ] I guess families can no longer take field trips to the DOJ. Here's the part that was news to me and really shocked me: [ QUOTE ] The drapes, installed in 2002 at a cost of $8,000, [/ QUOTE ] You've got to be sh*tting me. They could have dressed her up in a designer wardrobe for $8000. They could have had a custom made bikini top made to cover them for $50. Someone should have been fired for spending $8000 to cover a statue's boobs. what wasteful idiots. |

(in or out of government) For this example... I'm really curious how drapes can cost 8 grand. Did someone shop and do some price comparisons? What material was used and why? Maybe there's a good reason and we just haven't been told why this would cost $8K? Did someone buy $1000 drapes and pocket $7K? |

Couldn't we just give them a Mumu?
Worked for Homer Simpson. |

Re: Uh oh... Ashcroft Gone and the moral decline begins
The sad part is they spent $8K on the drapes, and now, after 4 years, they're putting them in the closet.
Perhaps they should have rented? |

I fully support this plan. |

[/ QUOTE ] Government is not inherently wasteful. A government is like a business... it can be run efficiently or not. I'm pretty certain there are a lot of people in Government who would not spend $8K on drapes. |

That doesn't disprove the fact that government by its very nature is wasteful. |

Re: Uh oh... Ashcroft Gone and the moral decline begins
OUR government may be wasteful, but that's not to say its 'inerent'. I think there's been a long increase in institutional wastefulness over time.
There's nothing that says someone in government couldn't have scruples. Imagine if someone said, "we have to have drapes to cover this statues exposed breast (a moment passes to allow them to stop giggling over the moron that thought this was necessary)... you know, my wife has some fabric at home that isn't being used, and she's good with a needle... we'll have it fixed tomorrow and it won't cost us anything." If Betsy Ross was around today and we needed a flag, it would have cost $1.4 million to design it. (the fact that it didn't cost that back then shows the wastefulness is NOT inherent... its something people have worked at!) |
