That was on a slip of paper in the Phil Helmuth interview.
The question it brought to mind is: Does the attitude you take into a game affect the game itself? I'm not talking about how you play, but rather if you go in feeling like you are going to make every draw, will you make every draw? Yes, mathematics tells us what the odds are for any given situation, but can YOU influence whether or not the odds will come through? Just because you have the pot odds to make a call doesn't mean that the card will actually come... |

Of course not - your mindset has nothing to do with how many times the cards will come up. Either they do or they don't, you have no control over that.
However, your mindset DOES affect how well you play, and when you're playing well and happy, its much easier to remember the times the draws DO come in as opposed to missing. -Edge |

So what does decide whether or not the draw will come through?

You asked: "So what does decide whether or not the draw will come through?"
Absolutely nothing "decides" the cards. They are utterly, absolutely random. Tryin to influence the cards by "positive thinking" is childish. Regards, Al |

There is obviously no relationship between perceived mental influence over playing cards and the actual distribution of the cards. You can believe otherwise, but that would put you in the category of someone who could accept that the Klingons are poised to attack earth from a hidden moon base. I cannot prove the moon base does not exist, so it could be true.
I do agree with Doyle Brunson and others who have repeatedly stated that a positive attitude and winning state of mind do influence outcomes. This has to do with the focus the player can bring to the game, not his magical ability to influence card distribution. The exception, of course, would be cheaters who are not really influencing card distributiuon by telepathy, rather they are cold decking strangers at home games. |

sure hope not--tough getting all that sticky chicken blood off the cards....
As a musician, I think Demana has a point, though. There are times when you're just "in tune" with the cosmos. We call it positive, etc. People try many ways to create that state--through meditation, bio-rhythm tracking, etc. I think probably you're more likely to make the right plays and folds when you're in the flow (or 'zone'). Random is random--but some days you're in the stream, and some you're stuck on a rock! lol We'll draw a merciful curtain over the ones where you're up to your neck in swamp sludge.... |
