How do you become a dealer?

I live about 40 minutes away from AC, I need a job, and being a dealer sounds like it's something I want to do.

How hard is it to get the job? Should I go out and buy 2+2's book for dealers? Do I need to attend a dealing school? Should I?

Pretty much any information anyone has on dealing, or how to get a job dealing, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

I have found that the best way to become a dealer is to walk into the casino poker room and ask for the room manager. When you can talk with him, ask what training you need to deal in his Casino. Many of the Casinos are now operating their own training.

I would suggest visiting the AC casinos website and browse the employment page. You might be able to apply online or it will give you requirements for the job and where to apply.

If the casinos request a dealing school, look into the AC area for poker dealing schools. Simply google to find "casino colleges" or "poker dealing school". The dealing school I looked into in Florida is around $900 and takes four weeks. You will probably have better luck finding a cheaper and better school in AC.

Are you in the Northeast? If so, Foxwoods has their own free training program. Essentially, you need to be able to speak English (kind of) and have a functioning brain and they will train you for free. It's a six week program that goes through the basics (and I mean stuff that will make you fall asleep) all the way through the complex situations that might arise (all-ins with split pots and chopped pots at the same time, etc.). If you qualify for training, you do not get paid while you train but are guaranteed a job in the casino. Your poker experience will, most likely, ensure that you graduate in the top 2% of your class.

I have a friend who starts work there very soon who hated the training b/c of the boredom (early on at least) and did very well. You can also simply call casinos and ask them if you are not close to one. I also agree with the poster who mentioned walking into the poker room and asking.

If $10/hr interests you, I have a job at subway I could hook ya up with.......seriously though, I believe they average about 3x this. (disclaimer: my local casino is big and busy.)

It would also be a great idea to check out "The Professional Poker Dealers Handbook." Definitely good. It goes over dealing, etiquette, etc. Check it out.

Most of the other post covered just about everything. But If you are going to ac, your probalby going to have to pay for your schooling. Be very careful of the school you choose. The best thing to do is talk to the room or shift manager and find out which school that particular casino is most comfortable hiring dealers from. Each school has some kind of reputation within the industry. The biggest thing that will contribute to your success in practice. Dealing is alot of repetion and procedure, much of which can be practiced on your own. Also, familiarize yourself with all the rules of the poker room your looking at, while you probably grasp the rules on the playing side, its important to try and look at it from the other side before you get their.
