Default what does \"M of #\" mean? newb question

Reading HOH and HOH2 is on my todo list. Until then, could someone please explain what "M of 8" (for example) means? An overview is fine. I just want to be able to follow these hands better. I'm guessing it has to do with your stack size relative to other stacks (or chip average). Thanks.
