What does overlay mean when people are reffering to bonuses?

It usually applies to a situation where the payout is guaranteed but the entrant fees don't add up to cover that cost (normally tournament situations).
$10,000 guaranteed. Buyin $50 Entrants 100 = $5000 overlay If everyone were equal in skill this tournament is worth $50 since you're paying $50 and expect to get back $100 ($10,000 / 100 entrants) for a 100% overlay. |

If you go to a bar and there are only you and four other guys but there are 50 women, your overlay is good.
It doesn't guaranteed you sucess but your expected return goes way up if say there were only 2 women. |
