B&M - 1st Hand Push - What are your ranges here?
Hi All,
£30 Freezeout tourney ($50) 100 runners, top 9 paid. T2000 and blinds 25/50 first level going up every half hour. Relatively quick structure, where you need to get chips quickly in the middle stages of the tourney. I am in BB. UTG folds, UTG+1 raised to 150, MP1 calls, MP2 fold, MP3 raises All In. My questions are: What are your calling ranges in the Big Blind on the first hand? What ranges do you put MP3 on for his push on the first hand? Will give results later. Cheers, Jon |

pretty bad structure, AA-QQ I call with. If a better structure may even fold QQ.
I am mucking AK here. |

You probably know this, but the fact that it's the first hand shouldn't enter your calculations except in the effect that it may have on the villain's play.
As for the ranges, it's tough. Most times it is a made but vulnerable hand - mid-pockets of some variety. But I know there are also people out there who would make this play with AA to see if anyone is curious enough to call with AQ or TT, or air to establish a Laggy image. I'm probably calling with QQ, definately KK and AA, but not much else. |

AA, and you still could get fished.

AA and, as it's only $30, KK.

Re: B&M - 1st Hand Push - Results
OK,
I looked down at QQ in the BB. I put the pusher on TT+, AK and AQ. I thought with this range that QQ was a good enough call. Given that there is also a MP raise and call, I thought if this move was made with AK or AQ, there is a possibility that other aces were in this hand! Of course he flipped over Aces and I was out first hand. I thought about this hand while after, but still feel I made the right play. Cheers, Jon |

This used to mean that it was a bad hand. Nowadays, it means a solid hand.

Agree.
It depends how 'solid', solid actually is! Jon |

Re: B&M - 1st Hand Push - Results
No way I would have put him on AA. Maybe KK if I had the feeing he was new and afraid to play after the flop, but this is still a stretch. I'd have read this as AK, loose AQ-AT, or a mid PP.
I'd probably have only called AA-QQ, but would have been nervous about calling with the QQ. |
