I've heard a couple times that following small realtively obscure teams very closely can be a good way to make money at SB - like follwoing a Division II school closely - and ideally knowing a coach or player there to keep up with latest injuries. How valid is this idea?

It would work, but you would have to find a book that takes action on D2 sports. People who advocate this approach usually are talking about some of the "mid-major" and smaller conferences in college hoops.
