Young Guys Table Image
This is an image question, I am 21 and have a relatively baby face. In all of the Casino's that I play at, everyone is really passive with a'lot of checking/calling, not raising someones bet with above average hands such as top two or even one card straights. I raise a'lot pre-flop, sometimes with relatively marginal hands such as AJo or KJs in late or middle positions, because I like to play big pots. Anyways, people seemed to get peeved at this because they can't stand the fact that someone 10-20 years their junior is raising them and cramping the style of play. In fact, this trend leads them to calling me with worse hands, and playing back at me with almost anything because they want to "Teach this arrogant kid a lesson". This tends to give my bets less respect and it seems that I get more people drawing against me with shitty hands and in turn getting drawn out. I know you want more people in hands calling your bets with weak draws, but the game I play in there are usually 4-6 people per flop, it gets frustrating when some random dude catches his 4 outer against you because my image induced him to try to catch his miracle out as opposed to folding. I guess my question is how do I incorporate my style of play into a method in which my bets and raises get respect, instead of people trying to "Show me how to play poker". Random question, its just something that really annoys me.

Re: Young Guys Table Image
You should take advantage of your natural image, and
learn the best style of play for it. Bonus: You get to laugh and enjoy yourself at the table. On the other hand, if you want to be quiet, serious, intense and occasionaly surly, you can get people to fold your bets and raises much more often. Show down lots of winners. Your choice. |

Re: Young Guys Table Image
Once again, can you explain to us why you want your raises to get more respect? Why do you want worse hands to fold? What is wrong with people putting more money in the pot with hands that you beat?

Re: Young Guys Table Image
Pump your big hands for all that they are worth and keep in mind that suckouts from lesser hands are "Sklansky bucks" in your pocket. However, being able to swllow your pride and curtail your testosterone when you KNOW that you are beat (aka folding) is the ultimate accomplishment.
BTW, AJ off ain't all that hot multi-way but I like your KJs play. |

Re: Young Guys Table Image
I doubt your baby face has anything to do with their bad play. You could look like Ernest Borgnine and they'd still go for the 4-outer.

Re: Young Guys Table Image
OK. Your variance is going up and you don't like that. Are you playing a higher limit than you are comfortable at?
Otherwise, why is it you want to win less long term money than you are currently? |

A game full of players making loose calls when you raise is certainly what I want. Getting sucked out is just part of the game. |

Re: Young Guys Table Image
When I see someone with your "image" at the table, I get sad and happy. Sad because my variance goes up, because you and the older "teach you how to play" guys make it more expensive for me to play my speculative hands. Happy because you build the pots for me. I play no different.
BUT, consider this: when you raise PF with AJo and 7 or 8 people see the flop (not uncommon), these gutshots and hands with similar drawing odds now can profitably chase. My 89s that "you" raised behind me and I call (although not happy about the 2 bet SC), leaves me with odds to call down maybe even if I only have backdoor draws. This will look like a suckout. You may want to consider using more selective aggression. (And be sure the "older" people who appear to be gunning for you are actually fish, and not sharks.) |

Re: Young Guys Table Image
Do you make converstion at the table? If not, I might suggest a little idle converstion. Divert their attention. My thinking is they won't pay as much attention to what you are doing thus try to "put you in your place".
Be part of the table, while very non-chalantly taking their money. If you become part of the table, most older guys actually take kindly to hanging/being friendly with younger guys. Makes 'em feel young. |

Re: Young Guys Table Image
Ive got that same image going for me too. Im 20 but look like I could be 15 and I get way more action than I deserve.
My image is usually an obnoxious kid that is just getting lucky and it tends to put people on tilt b/c in their minds they are losing their money to some lucky little [censored] talking bastard. So if I were you id do what I do. Although im always worried about getting my ass kicked in the parking lot. My friend heard some drunk Abercrombie type that couldnt play poker to save his life say to his buddy something like "look at that little kid im gonna take all his chips". With one adverstised bluff and a little needling he was calling me all the way down to the river with mid to bottom pair all night which is definately +EV. |
