Out of Position when the \"Death Card\" Hits
Preface: This is not a bad beat story in disguise. I'm unsure how I should have handled the river. Check-fold or bet fold-if-raised?
Midway through a large online $55 NL Tourney. Blinds 25/50. I was just moved to this table, and it seems a bit passive. I have T1,500 which is slightly below average. UTG limps and I limp in EP with 66; 2 more callers and the blinds call. The flop is a jackpot: A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]6 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. BB checks. I bet T250 (to pressure flush draws) and draw only one late position caller. Turn is 4 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. I bet T500 and am called. River is A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], meaning any ace has now "2-outed" me. In position, this hand is easy--check behind or fold to a big bet. Out of position, it's tough because a check invites a bet from a busted flush draw. What's your line? |

Yikes!
I hate hands like this. The pot is what, $1350, and you have $750 left with one player and no time to get a read? Hmmmm...I'm thinking you're betting into an A here. I would NOT check. OK...dumb idea, but I would fire $250 hoping he thinks it'a value bet saving $500 to play some more. Dumb idea #2...push representing a set of As with a bigger kicker. Checking just seems wrong but I don't know that dumb idea #1 and #2 are any better. What happened? |

As noted, idea #2 doesn't apply because ANY ace now has aces full. I bet $200, figuring a bluff couldn't come over the top all-in. If raised, I would have folded. Villan called with A8. |

Re: Out of Position when the \"Death Card\" Hits
yeah, that's the problem there... flip your thinking to the other side.. if you're in his shoes with the A, do you raise? Of course not. You're either splitting or you're slowplaying the winning hand. raising only causes weaker holdings (like yours) to fold, right?
this spot sucks. I feel your pain. |

In a low limit online event, I think the remote chance that my opponent mucks A-low (misreading the board), makes a horrible call with a hand like 66, or misclicks is worth the risk of paying off quad 4s. |

Re: Out of Position when the \"Death Card\" Hits
Ew. Worst card ever. This may seem a bit weak tight, but I am checking the river, then giving myself enough credit to figure out what his river bet (assuming he bets) means- if its a bluff with a busted draw, or if it actually is the dreaded ace.
