So I played one for the first time today and man alive is this typical? For the first 3 levels everybody sees the flop no matter what the price, then once they've spewed most of their chips, they tighten up. Is it really just a matter of being tight to make it into the money?

Yes. Kind of. That will get you pretty easily into the final 5. After that, you still need to make good decisions.
