what to bet
Tell me kind sage(s),
How much, after one has decided to raise, should be pushed forward? Is there a "rule of thumb"? Do you simply bet an amount that would give your opponent(s) bad odds for his/her range of hands? thoughts anyone? Cambraceres |

Re: what to bet
What game are playing?
NL Hold'em I assume. The right answer is it depends on the particular situation, the board and the type of opponent. For example, pre-flop most good players raise the same amount whether they have AA or AJ to disguise their hand. Standard pre-flop raise is 3-4x bb plus 1 bb for each limper. |

Re: what to bet
As has already been suggested, it depends.
There are different kinds of bets. When you're opening preflop, as 4_2 said, there are "standard" sizes and there will often develop a standard size for the particular game you are in. After the flop there are continuation bets, probe bets, stop bets, etc. that all have different sizes relative to the pot. Which you decide to use is based on what you hope to accomplish, and that's far too complicated to describe in a post here. If you haven't read the Harrington on Hold'em books, you might look there. He has a pretty good discussion of these in a tournament context. I'm assuming the new Sklansky/Miller book will have a similar discussion for NL ring game play. Regards, T |

I've lost track of when it will be released. I think it was once scheduled for early 2006. The books forum has more information. Regards, T |
