Default Who\'s the bigger liar?

BETFAIR, the controversial betting exchange, has gained something of a reputation for throwing brickbats at its high street bookmaker rivals.

But the company was given a taste of its own medicine yesterday when an internet poker website disputed Betfair’s recent claim to be the “fastest-growing poker room in the world” .

“Surely some mistake,” cries my man at PokerRoom.com, the Stockholm-based business set up five years ago by two poker-mad young Swedes. “They say they’ve pulled in 7,000 new members in the last month. But we’re currently pulling in, on average, 7,000 new players a day.

“It looks like a case of a Swedish full house beating Betfair’s pair of aces.”

MY ITEM yesterday about the spat between Betfair and PokerRoom.com over which of them is the fastest-growing online poker company has added fuel to the fire. Betfair says that its Swedish rival does not make its data available for comparison, adding that there appear to be some discrepancies in the number of users it claims to have. “It seems the Swedes are bluffing, and Betfair Poker has made them flush,” preens a Betfair spokeswoman.
