Im relatively new to SnGs and am looking for a primer on the subject of play just outside the money.

Ideally you would like to have a decent stack built up so your question becomes how do I guarantee a win vs a second place finish.
But as far as trying to make it into the money.... Just realize that you will be dealt few premium hands and you will have to push at some point. Don't call your chips away, save them for your all-in moment of glory... ideally against the shortest stack you can find in bad position. |

Gap concept. You rather raise/push than call raises. Fastest way might be to bug some low level SNG guru to send you some hand histories, and learn from that. Also, learn ICM math and buy SNG power tools program.
