Default 4/8 hand- i raise the river...

4/8 live game at pakers casino in shoreline washington:

I am utg+1 in a 6 handed game and look down to see A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], and i raise

player behind me calls (he is decent, he was waiting for a seat in 8/16, and has mentioned that he plays 15-30 online a lot, so i assume he's competent)

button calls, BB calls, four players in

flop comes out A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 9[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

i bet, plater behind raises, other two players fold, i call

turn 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

i bet, he raises, i call

river 2[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

i check, he bets, i raise...

thoughts?

Did you put him on exactly AT or A9? Otherwise, if you think you're ahead, you're better off 3-betting the turn.

Personally, with a "decent" read, I'd put him on the following range of hands:
Ax [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], AQ, AJ, ATs, a set, any hand that gave him an open ended straight flush draw. You're not beating any of these hands except for ATs and, really, a decent player isn't going to cold call an EP raise with that.

Re-raise flop. You have isolation and best hand.
Bet turn.

AJ isn't beating AT or A9. The only hand that HERo is ahead of on the river (and was behind to on the flop) is T9.

Default rationale behind turn and river bets

AJ was really a tough hand to hold in this situation, thare was all kinds of stuff that i was behind, and T9 is the only conceivable holding that i could beat. AK or AQ had me by the balls, and after he raised the turn, i was pretty sure that's what he had.

I went ahead and bet out on the turn in case he had JcQc or some other draw, and has raised the flop in an attempt to get a free card on the turn if he didn't hit. when he raised the turn, that pretty much eliminated the possibility of a draw- now i'm thinking AQ or AK, TT, 99, or T9.

I'm actually suprised that he didn't check behind on the river, given that both the flush and a full was now on board.

i figured that if he was bluffing, he would fold to a raise, and if he wasn't he would re-raise, and i'd have an easy fold. i thought there was about a 25% chance that he was bluffing or would fold AK or AQ to a check-raise, and, given the size of the pot, i went ahead and raised. he gave me an exasperated look, flashed AQ, and mucked it, and i got away with some pretty bad plays.

i see that i should have reraised the flop to know exactly where i was at, and probably check-called it down if he capped.

he asked what i had and i told him. he didn't believe me.
