Disagreeing with Phil Ivey
Saw an interview with Ivey when there were 3 tables left, and he was still in it. He was asked about the unknown players left, and he credited TV with improving the level of play. He did not mention the internet.
To me, the net has allowed millions of players to play billions of hands and get the experience it used to take decades to acquire. In addition, the net has forums like 2+2 and others that are great learning tools. Poker on TV, on the other hand, is generally lacking in the insightful commentary department, and is usually short-handed NLHE. IMO it pales in comparison to the net as a source for improved poker play. Heck, there have a half dozen or so good poker books than came out in the last couple of years. I would say they had a bigger impact than TV too. |

Re: Disagreeing with Phil Ivey
He's not wrong.
Consider a "WPT Poker Corner" in which Shana Hiatt discusses poker books the pros read/respected in their education. Whoa!? You mean there are books written about poker? There's stuff to learn and think about? "He made a great play there with XX considering YY and ZZ." Whoa!? there's strategic elements to the game, it's not just gambling? "That's what makes players like Phil Ivey so great." Damn! Let me get at some of that. Anything that hips the general public to the fact that poker is a game of thinking/skill is going to wind up improving the beginner's level of play in poker. So, while you may think Mike Sexton's commentary (or whoever's, just picked Sexton as an example) is not particularly sharp or insightful or that hours of watching 6-handed play on the WPT won't make anyone a well-rounded poker player by itself, the fact alone that there's more information available today than ever before will probably lead more players to think about the game critically, and that ultimately improves the level of play. TV is the seed, online and tournament poker is the harvest. |
