Default What Did Josh Arieh Think of the WSOP Coverage?

Here's a link to his blog Josh Arieh Blog

I kind of like his idea of throwing chairs. It seemed to do wonders for Dan Druff's coverage. :-)

I pretty much echo Josh toughts. I was in the Pot Limit Event (the one before the Omaha), and it was really dissapointed. They didn't show any of my interesting hands; and they showed just too much Freddy Deeb, nothing against Freddy, but he finished 5th in that event. And like Josh I'm already thinking what I'm gonna do next time; maybe some stupid joke about Norman; maybe dance in the table anytime I want a hand to be shown in TV.

Ratings. I was in your camp David until I played in some local card games with my friends and they were all psyched watching Poker Superstars 2. Enough said. For every one of us there's like 30 people who just wanna see... MORE DEEB!

That sucks. If I ever get on TV and am not covered, I'm gonna be super-pissed.

That's show-business, Sirio.

I'm sure you realize that ESPN is not interested in providing an historically accurate poker-document as much as an entertaining hour of television (for the average tv viewer, not the average 2+2er) and cultivating the game's personalities. It really has nothing to do with "interesting hands" or how the event played out. Why do you think Barry Greenstein is constantly complaining that the best poker players aren't the ones you see on tv? No, they're not the best, but they make for the most interesting tv-content. Players like Deeb, whose schtick plays off very well on tv and Phil Gordon (who, depsite busting out 8th in the event that I was on, got quite a bit of air time) will always have an edge in getting their face on tv.

Producers don't care about talent, they care about ratings. So, you have to choices: Win the tournament (in which case they'll make you look interesting) or give them some other reason to notice you (playing roshambo, twirling a seat cover around your head, whatever).

Still, I don't think you (or Josh) should be too bummed out. Getting to the final table is much more important than getting air time, right?

Edit: I didn't mean to imply that Deeb and Gordon weren't talented players, merely that they received the lion's share of air-time despite playing relatively miinor roles in the events that were broadcast.

I thought this was pretty funny:

[ QUOTE ]
To me the highlight of the entire show was the Beer Commercial in the first 10 minutes when Norm said " Come on David, this is Omaha, not tiddlywinks!"... I thought that was really cool... Do you think the WSOP got paid for using those WSOP images in their commercials???? I'm sure they do... but I promise you one thing... i never saw a penny from that beer company whose beer taste like staduim toliet water (not that i have ever tasted it, but from one whiff of it I can imagine how it tastes!)

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm guessing he's talking about the comment from the 2004 wsop where he told someone they weren't playing tiddlywinks, and he expects some sort of endorsement deal from it.
