Open limping/raising
I saw a thread on this the other day, but the info was incomplete and my questions weren't getting any responses.
From MP, what hands that were callers become raisers when opening? Same thing for LP. |

Re: Open limping/raising
2 hours and not one response on a basic straight forward question? Did I phrase my question wrong?
In a tight game SSH says you play (not raise) from MP: Any 22-88, A9s-A2s, KTs-K9s, QJs-Q9s,JTs-J9s,T9s-98s, AT, KJ From LP you play (not raise): 22-88, A7s-A2s, K9s, QTs-Q9s, JTs-J9s,T9s-98s, KJ, KT, QJ,QT If opening in MP or LP, what hands become raisers? Are there any else to add to the list that aren't on the SSH list? |

Re: Open limping/raising
The problem (for me at least) is that the question is neither basic nor straigtforward.
Am I seated in MP1, MP2, MP3? Highjack, CO, or Button? What is the table texture like -- how am I viewed by my opponents and what is the reaction to a raise (from the table in general)? What sorts of reads do I have on my opponents to act behind me? Are they tight? Loose? Passive? Aggressive? Unknown? What is the blind structure? Depending on the answers to these questions, I might give you hundreds of different answers. There is no "chart" that dictates when to openraise what would otherwise be a limping hand. |

Re: Open limping/raising
As others have said, there are no single right answers to these questions. As a general guideline, the hands you should be favoring are ones that have a reasonable chance of winning unimproved and that play reasonably well heads up. A hand like A9s or 88 is much more attractive to open-raise with than a hand like 89s. With the former, you always have something to showdown so even if you miss the flop, you're not in that bad shape. If you end up against a weak big blind who doesn't check raise much, you can often bet the flop, bet the turn and then take your free showdown and hope your hand is good (although there are certainly other lines depending on the board and the opponent). With the latter, you are often stuck with the unpleasant choice of bluffing the whole way through or risking someone taking your pot with queen high.

Re: Open limping/raising
Your question is vague and uninspiring.
The basic answer: it depends on where you are sitting, who's sitting after you and how the table's been working. |
