Default rationale behind opening raises

It seems that many players make an opening raise 3-4 times the big blind in no limit tourneys. Do most players feel that this is correct and how should it be modified if you are opening from early, middle or late positions?

After Dan Harrington won the WSOP in 1995 he told me that when he opened with a raise he always raised it four times the big blind no matter what his hand was.

I typically raise to about 3xBB ( about a pot sized raise) no matter which position or cards. I adjust based on the number of limpers.

This method seems to work well. It is normally enough to steal plus if re-raised you can muck hands without much damage.
