Default Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.

I lived in Atlantic City for 17 months before moving back to my parents house the beginning of 2005. To those familiar with atlantic city, is it just me or are the poker rooms teeming with railbirds and bums. I'm assuming unless you are a very social guy, look like a mark (sucker), or are very familiar with the atlantic city scene, you will know some railbirds yourself.

1. Carlos Mendez. (Mexican that looks like a conartist) He was a long time bum at Tropicana until Borgata opened up. Now he plays/lives there. Possibly the biggest scum of AC poker rooms. I don't know anyone that owes more money to poker players than he does. I don't know how he is still alive. In the past year, he had a nice run from winning several tournaments consecutively and ran up his money in the 40-80 game. Notorious for playing over his Bankroll.

2. Patches. (Big, African American) Don't get me wrong, i love patches, but this guy needs to chill w/ being a fair-weather friend. He is a real nice guy actually, but the thing that bothers me is that he has such a hustler's mentality. He is probably the most famous AC regular because he has alot of friends and people are always willing to help him out. I know I have.

3. Tim Wilson. (Caucasian, FAT, balding, sometimes w/ beard) He's a goofy guy that always wears simpson shirts and loves to smoke weed. He has no shame as he will sleep at empty poker tables and sit behind you and sweat you, waiting for you to scoop a pot so he can get a bone.

4. Leo August. (African American, tall, glasses, big) Another player i know pretty well. I don't know anyone that can turn $20 into 10K in less than a week. He has taken small money and ran it up to 10-20K at LEAST 8 times in the past year. Excellent tournament player, so I'm pretty sure you guys might have seen him looking for a backer/sponser for tournaments when he is broke. Actually, all the railbirds listed do this all the time, but Leo is actually a very good "horse". Not even a month ago, he went from broke to winning 2 tournaments at the taj, playing 40-80 then 80-160, had over 20K, then lost it all playing 80-160 and heads up NL w/ some fish. I believe he's broke again, but you'll see him in action soon.

5. Pat (Lanky, Deaf, Mute, Goofy) - Ha, if you guys play low limit, you will know him. he's the goofy guy that is deaf and mute and loves to drink beer. His table manners are HILARIOUS. He always gets banned or kicked out, but always manages to get back in. I think the whole pokerroom staff is sympathetic towards him. Man, what a character. Never buy a room off him, i bought a room off him and when i went in, there was two guys already in there. HE SOLD THE ROOM TWICE! Now that's business! I asked for my money back, but he was broke. When i played in the same game as him, I gave him a bad beat w/ bottom pair, open end straight draw and snapped his QQ when the bottom pair paired up. He took a note pad, vigorously jotted a message...it was an essay, but long story short, he said we are even.

So there's my top 5. There are ALOT more and i'm sure alot of people don't know their names, so be descriptive.

OH YEAH, you can't forget FISH. He's the Etheopian looking guy that caters to the Pit players at the taj and borgata. He gets honorable mention...

Patches is cool. He was a dealer in NYC for a while as well. He shouldn't be on a list like this.

theres this guy i see all the time whos rarely in a game, seems like hes always sweating somebody. anywho, hes got dirty blondish hair, mustahce, kinda on the heavyset side. usually has a tan membersonly kinda jacket on. one time he fell asleep at an empty table in a chair at the trop, and people were throwing garbage at him, that was pretty funny.

interesting read...

What about 7th Street? He is an older black gentleman with glasses and a beard. He plays 10/20 and 15/30 stud at the Taj, but actually I see him more often just hanging out or playing chess than actually playing cards. He was sitting at an empty table on the high limit side once, and I walked up and sat next to him. He was actually doing a physics calculus problem on a napkin, and there were other napkins scattered around him with various calculus and linear algebra work jotted down on them. Someone told me he used to be a college professor and is a genius, though obviously a bit of a recluse.

Wow, I feel like a degenerate since I know EVERY ONE of these people except one. I don't know Carlos' background story, but he is a tough player at the Borg 40 game. Everyone else you pretty much hit the nail on the head. The key to being a regular in AC... NEVER EVER EVER LEND MONEY TO ANYONE. EVER.
