what makes a good player
A common scenario for those of us who play with great frequency is that we are asked what makes one poker player better than another; and if two players are equally skilled doesn't luck determine the winner?

Re: what makes a good player
Perhaps one needs to make a distinction between 'a better poker player', and 'a better poker pro'
The distinction being that the better player would generally beat the better pro, but the better pro makes more money in general than the better player. Not always the case, but it can be so. The best poker player in the world 4-tabling $1/$2 will be a worse poker pro than the moderate player bringing in 0.5 BB/100 multitabling the 30/60 game. |

Re: what makes a good player
I went with decision-making.
Let's say Player A is a solid player with a few leaks and flaws, but he's basically good, and he's got several very beatable games in his area so he makes a fortune. And Player B plays flawless poker, I mean perfect, but the players in his casino are considerably stronger than those in Player A's casino. So Player A is making more money, but is he the better player here? I don't see how making more money makes him the better player when he'd be the underdog heads up... |

Re: what makes a good player
Decision-making is clearly the answer. "Making good decisions" is the entirety of playing well.

You need consistency. However, I wouldn't describe half the time as "making good decisions". That's "sometimes making good decisions". I agree with MCS. "Making Good Decisions" = "Playing Good Poker". Good poker makes good poker players. -Sam |

Re: what makes a good player
Gotta be decision making. The other three options focus on results, and the quality of a play can't be determined by the observed results.

Re: what makes a good player
Results do matter, but I agree that when it comes down to it decision making is the best way to get those better results.
