First time to casino - what to expect?
I'm going to my first b&m casino in about 3 hours for a NLHE tournament for a $20 buy-in. Being a newb to the real game, I was wondering if someone could answer some questions for me.
1) Who moves the dealer button, the casino-dealer or the players. 2) When I make a raise, do I verbalize the amount to the table or does the dealer do that? 3) How do you fold, check, call etc? Do you just say it? 4) What denominations of chips do you get and do you ever struggle to make the right raise amount? Thanks. Wulfheir |

Re: First time to casino - what to expect?
I would consider myself a "newb" too, but I'll throw out what I've noticed in my first few trips to B&Ms.
[ QUOTE ] 1) Who moves the dealer button, the casino-dealer or the players. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not sure if this is casino dependent, or dealer dependent, but I've seen both. Sometimes moving it seems to help the dealer, and sometimes it just seems to throw off their rythmn. If I do it, I usually say, "Button moved", just to let the dealer know. [ QUOTE ] 2) When I make a raise, do I verbalize the amount to the table or does the dealer do that? [/ QUOTE ] I just say raise, and let the dealer say how much. [ QUOTE ] 3) How do you fold, check, call etc? Do you just say it? [/ QUOTE ] Fold by tossing your cards towards the dealer. (Keep them low, and face down) Check by saying check, or tapping the table. Call by saying call, then putting the money in front of you. And raise the same way. This probably stems from being new, and afraid of doing the wrong thing, but I try and make sure to say, call, check or raise before I do anything with my chips. [ QUOTE ] 4) What denominations of chips do you get and do you ever struggle to make the right raise amount? [/ QUOTE ] What denominations you get depends on the structure of the tournament. I would imagine that for a $20 buy-in, you won't be in the minority as a new-ish player. When in doubt just take your time and ask the dealer if you have any questions. |

Be honest to yourself and to your fellow players. Tell the dealer you are a newbie, they will be extra helpful. And it might even give you a leg up on the competition!
