Default No Deals??

In a $100 buy-in live tournament, I recently got down to final 2, and when we began to discuss a save, i.e. to play for less than the difference between 1st and 2nd, the tournament director told us that deals were not permitted in his tournament.

Had I known this going into the tournament, it would have been easier accepted. The question here is not whether he had the right to impose this rule, because its his tournament and he can make deuces wild if he wants to. But rather, do you think it was in bad taste for him to impose this rule, when the world of tournament poker so commonly makes deals?
