How to retain and keep newbies from WPT from dying off
With the recent increase in new players online (I don't play B&M much, but I've heard it has affected B&M play too), does anyone have ideas how long this will last? Also, any ideas how to keep these people playing?
Some ideas: 1. Say "nh" when they suck out on you 2. When they tilt u, cuss/scream verbally but don't type it. 3. Does anyone ever say "sorry" when you beat someone badly in a pot? I sometimes do, and one person thinks it's silly to say (I'm sure others do but just don't verbalize it). - Tony |

Re: How to retain and keep newbies from WPT from dying off
It's a good question.
While not berating them for playing horribly is important I've always felt that saying "nh" every couple of minutes is hardly enough to expect them to enjoy the game. If I get any response I'm usually about the first to chat and express an interest in people at the table (yes I do mean online). I think that's more conducive to them enjoying the game, even if they do lose their money. Gary Carson made a similar comment in his book. His belief is that he takes money off poor players but that's only his fee for being "an entertainer". Friendly chatting has got to be better than the stony silence of a table full of misanthropic grinders... The art of conversation is dead. Either that, or he's f**ked off for a holiday. |

Just so. It's amazing what a little light discussion will do for a game and for the newbies in it. There's nothing like a bunch of grumpy old mid-limit Vegas pro's (or low-limit comp grinders) to make somebody head right back to anywhere else please dear God get me out of here... If every one of us made it our job to befriend one newbie every time we sat at the table (1) the games would get a lot better, (2) we'd have more fun, and (3) the world would be a marginally happier place. Go check out my comments in the softplaying thread on mid-high hold'em for more of my thoughts on this. Regards, Lee |

I always tend to say "sorry" after I make a huge catch against a hand that had me beat. I really do feel sorry, that is, until the chips slide over in front of me .

Most people are not misanthropicts. I would say either lazy or introverted.

I usually try to lose one out of every 8 hands when playing against a fish, usually to a 2-5 outer on the river

How to retain and keep newbies from WPT from dying off
hi tony, this may sound bad, but i don't want to retain these newbies. i want to clean them out, and have the WPT and WSOP continue to feed me fresh fishies to replace these broke ones. the market we are drawing from now is so untapped, that i don't think we need to fear burning through them all. this won't be an issue for years and years IMO. |

While I wouldn't dream of berating a bad player for sucking out.... When playing two tables at once, I find chat hard to do. The other table always seems to pop up right in the middle of typing. The occasional 'nh' is all I give. Well, except for my favorite two letters: ty

Hmmm, interesting point Granny.
One thing I'm noticing lately is that the games on Party are starting to get tighter and more aggressive. |
