Trips w/ Ace Kicker, what\'s my line?
I guess I blew this one, but I was UTG and nervous about a small boat. Should I have value bet this turn? Anyone pot the turn?

Re: Trips w/ Ace Kicker, what\'s my line?
dave,
You led out after the flop, showing strength, and golfnerp called. On the turn, you still had top set and nut flush draw. I think you should have bet here. Maybe potted it. Then golfnerp might have thought you flopped a boat - at least it would have showed strength and he wouldn't have been exactly sure. But you told him you were drawing by checking. You gave him a free card. On the river, you didn't fill up, you did get nut flush - but you weakly bet $1.00. I would have called golfnerp's river bet just in case he was making a play at the pot. Of course, if you find he had pocket Jacks, you're screwed, but I think it's worth a try. He might have had a smaller set or even a smaller flush. Who knows. It would help if you knew something about golfnerp's play, of course. |

Re: Trips w/ Ace Kicker, what\'s my line?
I'm being pessimistic about the situation, and saying that he had J-10-x-x with that river bet. You're right though, I could have considered a river call with the flush, maybe he only had a straight and thought he could take it down.

Re: Trips w/ Ace Kicker, what\'s my line?
In general I don’t like your line here.
If you are going to check the turn, which shows weakness and induces a bluff, then you have to call the river. This just encourages people to bluff you. I’d need a fairly good read or some PT data on this guy to lay this down. With just trips with an A, I can see an argument for pot control and just checking the turn. But you had a good low draw as well. FYI, I think the main value from the flush draw is that it encourages a weaker flush with Tx to stick around if it misses the boat. Other than that it only helps you break a tie with another AT, since you are ahead of any non ace Txxx now anyway. I also don’t like the tiny river bet which screams out, “please raise me, I’m weak!” --greg |

Re: Trips w/ Ace Kicker, what\'s my line?
That guy did end up Potting a bunch of rivers without going to a showdown. You're right, even on the outside chance that the Jack gave him a full, I probably should have looked him up. I have no reason to believe he was trapping with 10-3, 10-4, 3-3, etc.
From the hands I witnessed with him, he was a solid and occasionally tricky player. |

"From the hands I witnessed with him, he was a solid and occasionally tricky player."
But from your hand with him - it's hard to tell because you sort of "handed" it to him on a silver platter. In this case he was just taking advantage of an opportunity - though of course we'll never know whether he actually had a winning hand or not. Next time! |
