The game commentators were ever bigger idiots: At no time did they mention that the kicker could have just run out of the end zone, or at least to the end zone and get tackled.

The "analyist" says this to the game announcer: "At this point, do you think maybe you're better off falling on it and taking your chances that the defense will hold them to a field goal?" Are you kidding me? Farging moron.

Loved that play ... I lost a teaser with Minn +3 in it. Nice.

Can you chuck the ball out of the back of the end zone or is that along the lines of illegal batting??? He probably would have gotten caught before he could get to the end zone if he had to run it

[ QUOTE ]
ARTICLE 1. A runner may hand or pass the ball backward at any time,
except to throw the ball intentionally out of bounds to conserve time.
PENALTY—Five yards from the spot of the foul; also loss of down if by
Team A before team possession changes during a scrimmage
down (A.R. 3-4-3-III) [S35 and S9].

[/ QUOTE ]

Would this apply here if he punted or chucked it out the back?

Yes, the rule would apply.

If the punter would have headed directly to the end zone after he got his hands on the ball, he would have made it, easily.

He couldn't because he took some steps sideways to punt the ball.

Upon further reflection, Mason should have had his team run out of the end zone by design. Then he could have had a better, more controlled situation for the kickoff.

I dont think so. Because then a field goal wins it. Those 2 points are pretty critical in this situation.

I knew that would be the reply, but the free kick from the 20 should put you in a better spot to win the game. I know its easy to say it after the fact, but (especially with college kids) there is too much that can go wrong there.

By the way, I would not do this if there were 45 seconds on the clock. With 30, you can run around a bit and take time off the clock ... If all goes well, you will be kicking off with about 20 seconds left.
