honestly, how good is AVG free antivirus?

Not very good I am afraid.
Better than nothing if you don't want to spend, but you get what you pay for. In this case, not much...

I used to do the Norton,etc antivirus programs with the free after rebates offers, but the last few years I've been just using AVG. Haven't gotten any viruses.

(Of course, I'm also using a firewall and don't open unexpected attachments!)

Files you are worried about should be tested on www.virustotal.com

Had a file today with a trojan that only 3 engines caught.

Well you get what you pay for. None of the free alternatives are great. However, there are much better pay antivirus programs other than norton.

Any particular reason you neglected to mention any particular ones?

Oh not really. Personally I use Kaspersky although NOD32 is also a good one. I'd say those two are the best pay anti-virus solutions out there. They both also use much less resources than Norton and Mcafee.

With proper computing, and not be a total idiot, any free VScan should suffice. You could actually run no VScan and you will be fine with reasonable computing knowledge.

I ran without a VS for years with no ill effect. And I warez a lot during that time.
