Re: is gambling a sin?
I was raised Catholic. At each church picnic there were gambling games and a few kegs. Many churches have bingo nights.
Most religions probably say they are against gambling, but they are really against organizations other than their own making money off of gambling. |

Semi-gambling? Explain. [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] when theres a % of skill involved as blackjack or poker [/ QUOTE ] It is said that Casinos refer to the games as Gaming rather than Gambling -- because they are not Gambling. From what I have observed, Casinos are fairly straight forward in letting you know that they have an edge. To me, that represents honesty. What you are calling "semi-gambling" could be seen as much closer to theft than what the Casinos do -- unless you inform everyone that you have an advantage. Do you think using an advantage gained by skill is ethically different than using a natural advantage? |

Re: is gambling a sin?
I think "Churches, Religion," are not against gambling, per se, they are against the things frequently associated, wrongly or rightly, with gambling.
A person gambles away the grocery money. Bad. A person steals to get money to gamble. Bad. You can make your own list. Gamblers equate to degenerates to some folks. They don't/won't understand the entertainment value people like myself get from gambling. I don't own Tivo, cell phone, ipod, and a long list of "things" a lot of people enjoy. I usually win at the poker table. (slots eat my lunch!) Sometimes I lose. Does that make me a degenerate? Maybe. You can take the same (my) view about alcohol, dancing, hell, throw in sex, and on and on and on. It all depends on the extent of the "enjoyment" and the effect on others. To me, it's a values call. Not a morality issue. |

Re: is gambling a sin?
No, it is not considered a sin by the Catholic Church. The people against gambling tend to be right wing Protestant/Puritan extremists who helped bring George Bush into power (I had to tie this in with politics somehow).

So a majority of Americans view gambling as a sin? |

Re: is gambling a sin?
The Catholic church considers gambling sinful when it takes food off the table. If your'e gambling the rent money or grocery money thats sinful. If you're gambling excess money above and beyond what is required to meet the needs of your family that is not sinful.
