How should the rapists and murderers be handled?
Should we let them off easy because of the temporary stress and anxiety they endured during a disaster?
Or should we throw the book at 'em? I have a feeling this will be a big issue in the Louisiana courts in months to come, especially among the juries seated to pass verdicts. Are there mitigating circumstances for the crimes that have been committed? |

The population and subsequent jury pool will be very different in the new New Orleans. I don't think there are any mitigating circumstances -- but I can think of several aggravating. |

People looting goods should be given a bit of a break, but anybody engaging in violence should be given a harsh sentence.

In a word, roughly. Violent looters should be met with M-16s and very stern men looking down the barrels of them.

Come on guys... it's not rape... its civil unrest.
It's not violence... it's an under-privileged demographic acting out their rage against the "system". You don't actually expect these people to take ownership of their actions. IS MY SARCASIM GETTING THROUGH...? I HOPE. If you're sighted raping, attacking, or shooting at anyone... do not pass go... do not collect $200... you are shot(.) That's what martial law is. Maybe had these people evacuated like they were instructed... their wouldn't be so many issues right now. |

Re: How should the rapists and murderers be handled?
I've read articles about a 14 year old girl and an 8 year old boy who were literally raped for hours until they died (this in the Superdome). It may sound gruesome, but they need to save these bodies for DNA evidence. Do a search on "rape orleans" to read these reports.

Just like in Los Angeles in the riots...
It's shows the Mob mentality of these lower class "people". In L.A. they were content to burn down their own cities/ sites of commerce/ and low income housing... In LA it's much more disgusting. I didn't see much looting, raping, and destruction in the aftermath of 9/11. |

Re: How should the rapists and murderers be handled?
Are you seriously comparing what's happening in New Orleans with what happened in New York in 2001? You don't see why there might be a little bit of a difference in circumstances?
Go back to your AIDs analogies. |

Go back to your AIDs analogies. [/ QUOTE ] I see a huge difference... but that doesn't change the fact that we are seeing two different classes (not necessarily races) react to an oppurtunistic situation differently. In NY... locals could had easily feared for their life's and well-being, and used this excuse to loot. As it is... citizens organized themselves and even started walking (what an idea) mile to safer locations. Remember all those scenes of thousands of worried people walking across the Brooklyn bridge? |
