Default Hand Against Jim Brier

Posted with Jim's permission.

Had the pleasure of meeting Jim Brier at Commerce last week and ran into him again today. Great guy, except if he's in your game.

40-80. My big blind. Lot of limpers and no raise, Mirage-style. Can't remember how many players, but there was very littlemuck. Jim overlimps on the button. Small blind calls and I knuckle.

Flop comes A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]Q [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]2 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. All check to Jim. He bets. Small blind folds and as I look around the table, it seems everyone else is disinterested, or uninterested (?), or both. I call. Just the two of us see the turn:

9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img].

I bet.

Good idea, bad idea, standard, de rigueur, or meh?

After reading just the title, my answer is raise.

After reading the hand, my answer is that it depends ...

... on what 2 cards you are holding.

Clever not to tell us your hand so I'll try to figure Jim's.

Jim is a player who could have AQo (if memory serves from old articles he tends not to raise AQo on the button after many limpers), bottom set, or the flush draw. I don't see him betting the flop against a big field with less, except perhaps KQ, QJ, or QT.

For you to bet the turn, I'd say you have to beat the KQ, QJ, or QT OR hope he has a non heart side card (my guess is that he lays down the above hands if he doesn't). If he has any of the better hands he isn't going anywhere.

Now that I think of it, I guess your cards don't matter.

PS I Googled "de rigueur" and one of the first hits said "according to or demanded by etiquette". Is this right?

PPS I still have no idea what "meh" means even after getting this hit from Google:

Meh is used to describe any and every word possible, including:
Yes
No
maybe
kind of
never
always
ok
alright
no thankyou
yes please
look bitch i really dont care so just shut the f_ck up
if you want
whatever
If you wnat
i dont want to really
well
shut up
i dont really care
no honestly, i dont care...

if what youre trying to say by leaving your hand out is that you still hadnt looked at your hand when the turn came and you bet, then i like it.

otherwise: yawn.
