Check a set on the turn when there\'s 4 to a straight?
MP1 just sat down, and MP3 has only been around 20ish hands and doesn't seem overly aggressive or passive thus far. Is it right to check the turn here when 4 to a straight comes? Heads-up I would bet it. Had this been on the river, I would check/call, so I decided I would do the same here. However, I do have a redraw which I don't on the river, but is it enough to generally bet for value here?

I bet/call. It's not a given someone has a Q, and if you get raised, you have an, ahem, boatload of outs (sorry), so it's not terrible.

What if the J had come on the river? Say, the turn was the 8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. I bet, both call. Now the river comes J [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. What do you do? What about if the river comes J [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]?

I bet. Maybe one of them thinks I have the queen and folds.

Re: Check a set on the turn when there\'s 4 to a straight?
Why are you capping TT pf? OOP. 2 cold callers. Average seeming 3-bettor. How does that = cap?
I bet/call the turn. I doubt that MP2 has a Q unless it's AQ -- he hasn't done anything really stupid yet. He can't like QQ that much. AK is more likely than AA or KK. KT, AT are less likely, but not impossible by any means. MP1 probably isn't raising just a gutshot, but it could (fairly) reasonably be anything from a made straight to an ace, and could unreasonably be pretty much anything else. Non-Q hands would seem to outnumber turned straights. We're ahead of most of them, and have plenty of outs when behind against anything but a bigger set. Seems like a pretty reasonable bet. Edit: clarification. |

Whoa. I've been doing this forever, without much thought going into it. Alright, help me out then... a typical 3-bettor's range at this level is {AA-JJ, AK}, sound reasonable? So then I should only be capping QQ+? What about AK?

I'll cap with other hands situationally of course, but 3-bets from typical opponents are generally fairly reasoable -- remember that the biggest mistake most of our oppoents routinely make is playing too loose/pasively. You should adjust as you narrow down each opponent's 3-betting standards, but by default I'd lean toward big hands unless it's very multiway or something. |
