Default Dealing with Question: What do you do for a living?

How do you respond to the question of what you do for a living, while at the poker table?

Obviously you can't say you're a pro. I'd prefer not to lie, either.

Currently, I state that I'm "between jobs", but that sounds a little phony...

Yeah, I know... Now that you replied I can't delete it, though, so I notified the moderator of my own post.

However, mine was titled better, as I thought his would be more about the ego of wanting to have a "professional poker player" image or something.

1) Question is asked by a hot girl:

"Investment banking. I'm semi retired and helping a friend launch a new record label."

2) Question asked by a wrinkled poker ho:

"I'm a male nurse. I work in the STD ward."

3) Question asked by a guy:

"I'm just out of the big house. I'm looking. You got something?"

just say you're a student, "what are you taking?" "ah, a little of this, a little of that." or say something vague like, "i'm taking a business program" or blah blah. if you feel the need to lie about your profession, keep it vague. remember, god hates liars.

"Must be Astronomy, because my professors always tell me I'm taking up space."

Actually making a (harmless) joke out of whatever they ask is a good friendly way of avoiding questions like this.

Well, you just run the risk of intimidating your opponents. Certainly, while there are pros to that, some players might want to switch to an "easier" table.

It's not a matter of being ashamed of it, but more a matter of not scaring away the fish. It's the same way you don't act like a statue and bring a hat and sunglasses to a table full of tourists. It's -EV.
