Default river fold?

$10/$20 6 max on Party. Hadn't played with villain long but he seemed fairly loose passive.

Preflop: Hero is BB with 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img].
2 folds, 3 calls, Hero checks.

Flop: 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (4 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, MP folds, Villain raises, SB folds, Hero calls.

Turn: T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero bets, Villain calls.

River: Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero bets, Villain raises, Hero folds.

Is my river fold here ok? It completes a flush draw as well as a higher straight draw. Although he may realize this and decide it's a good place to try a bluff. I hadn't seen villain try anything tricky yet though (although, as I said, I hadn't played with him long).

Also, what about my flop bet. Would a check/call been a better plan with 4 players seeing the flop (2 to act after me)?

Flop is good, turn needs a C/R.

You can check/call the river if you think he will bet 100% of the time with any pair or the bad straight. But I think bet/fold is the least -EV

I thought his flop raise may have been for a free card on the turn. Isn't that a reasonable possibility? Risking giving a free card with this board seems like a mistake to me (both flush and higher straight draw possibilities). No?

its a possibility, but given that hes loose passive, and there are no callers between you and him and his raise is shutting out other potential callers, I think its safe to assume its more likely a made hand than a flush draw. And typically even when someone does raise a flush draw in spots like this, they bet the turn again when its HU.

You're giving him a lot of credit here. Most LPPs choose a hand to bet and bet it all the way out, and otherwise just check/call it down.

Check-raise the turn. I am calling the river.
