Default I feel like I should defend with this hand, but wasn\'t sure how.

Mid-late stages of WSOP daily $500NL event. 173 players started, down to about 35 (18 get paid).

The table is playing really solid, I think most people are Vegas tournament "regulars" as they all seem to know each other and I also recognize a couple people from TV events like "Ultimate Poker Challenge". Although most raises from EP and MP have been real hands, the CO and Button rarely decide not to open if folded to (i.e. people are not afraid to steal). My image is pretty much the same.

8-handed, blinds are $300/$600 with $75 antes.
I am in BB with T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 9[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. Villain (a large, slovenly gentlemen in his late-40s decked out in a Party Poker hat and shirt - FWIW) makes in $2500 to go from the Button. I have $6500 behind, and Villain has me covered.

Do I slam his hand back in the till, call and see a flop, or just muck?

Thanks.

Fold. If you're going to play the hand though, I like a stop and go...

Why not try a stop n go here? If you jam here he's probably not folding some hands you'd want him to fold (AT, A9, TT, and 99 come to mind). A stop n go may allow you to push him off his hand on a dangerous looking flop. To me, it seems like the best way to pick up some much-needed chips here.

Or...you could fold, but you can't let people push you around. You need to get some chips if you want to even make the bubble.

Don't think he'd fold too often to your preflop push, getting nearly 2:1. If you're going to play the hand, stop n go, otherwise fold. Folding is my first choice.

I think the stop and go is your only play (I would fold).

If he is good, his bet commits him to the pot preflop. But he should have just pushed in that case. You might have some F.E. here, but I dont like depending on my opponents to make mistakes when I dont have a hand. I'd have to read him as very weak tight to make this play. Id much rather wait for a late position to push a hand like this.

In general, the best time for a resteal is when play has tightened up where a steal usually wins, but the stacks are deep enough for someone to fold marginal hands (AJ, 77, etc).

The other side of the coin is, you probably have pretty significant equity in this hand. I cant see him raising AA-QQ this much without being very tricky, and you being very aggressive. So if you think he will fold 10-20% of the time, this is probably +CEV.

ummm, yes I may have just talked myself out of folding, but I tend to do that with any hand if left to my own devices long enough.

So what happened?

I'd just fold. Villain would be getting over 2.5 to one if you push so he *should* call even if on a steal. I agree a stop and go is better but I would prefer to pick a situation where I can be the aggressor from the beginning. You have enough chips to be a little patient.

is this the first time he has raised with the button?

personally against a thinking player his range of hands to raise here arent much given only 2 are left to act and your stack size. I think you're only play is to fold or push. To me a stop and go wont work as it is a obvious stop and go situation. Id fold
