Default Suggestion for Helping Stop \"Auto-Pilot\" Play

I'm a real newbie compared to you guys, but I've been playing so much that I was finding myself on auto-pilot and it was obviously affecting my bankroll. I created an electronic banner that stays at top of my computer screen that says "THINK...then ACT". The type is huge, in red and has really helped to slow me down. And so far it's working... even though the sample size is very small, I'm finishing in the money more often than I was before.

What I did for a while was to verbally state aloud why I was doing what I was doing. If I was raising, I said why, if I was calling, I had to have a verbally expressed reason. I did this for a while and it helped.

Would be interesting to know if you're an auditory learner rather than visual....I'm visual, so I went with the banner.

So the audio and visual are covered. This one is for the tactile folks:

Whenever you make a bad call snap youself in the balls real hard with an elastic.

auto pilot poker bugs me. i read an opponent to be very very strong in one hand, i was BB he was SB (battle of the blinds, no limpers to us), relatively late in a sng..i watched him check his cards and the way he reacted, the way he breathed, the way he motioned to JUST call told me he had an absolute monster. he looked nervous, he looked like "oh man how do i win the max amount of chips from this guy?"

i opted to check, (my buddy was watching and i lifted my cards high enough for him to see) flop was J95 rainbow, Villain bet like 150% of the pot and Hero insta folded.

My buddy told me I could have stolen preflop by raising and then reraising on the flop. I beg to differ, it cost me 1bb, no biggie but he berated my play. There are times to play Auto Pilot but it bugs me when some say you HAVE TO RAISE THERE! YOU HAVE TO RERAISE.

I spoke with villain afterwards and he told me that he had pocket kings and my read was indeed correct.
